About this place

The Royal Hungarian Post Palace served Novi Sad under Austria-Hungary, and the postcard of it in this archive is dated 1907 and captioned in all three languages of the city, as M. kir. postapalota, K. ung. Postpalais and in Serbian Cyrillic. It was a two storey corner building in a restrained neo-Renaissance manner, with a rusticated ground floor and arched entrances on the chamfered corner. The building that later served as the city's main post office, standing behind Trg mladenaca, is a different one: it went up in the late 19th century as the Hotel Central, in a mix of classicism and neo-Renaissance, and was handed over to the post after the boulevard then named for Queen Maria was laid out. What became of the Hungarian era post palace could not be established from the sources consulted.
