About this place
Štrosmajerova is the main street of the Podgrađe, the baroque lower town that sits inside the outworks of the Petrovaradin fortress and is known locally as Gradić. The quarter took shape between 1692 and 1728 and filled with the institutions of a garrison town, and the street climbs from it towards the fortress gates. At number 20 stands the Franciscan church and friary of St George, the oldest church in Petrovaradin, built between 1701 and 1714 on the model of the Jesuit church of Il Gesù in Rome. A railway ran along the street from 1941 until 1961, and the soot from it blackened the church's white front and the house fronts around it, which is what the photographs of trains in the street record. The name refers to Josip Juraj Strossmayer, the Croatian bishop of Đakovo who died in 1905.
