Furrier street (Ћурчијска улица) A pharmacy occupies the corner at the left, its signs lettered Gyogyszertar in Hungarian and Apoteka in Cyrillic, and people walk down the middle of the street.
About this place
Ćurčijska ulica took its name from the ćurčije, the furriers who worked along it, one of several streets in old Novi Sad named for the trade carried on there. The craft guilds were a strong and well regarded body in the town by the end of the eighteenth century, when a magistrate's census of 1770 counted the tradesmen and their religion and the Serbian and Hungarian craftsmen kept separate associations. This archive's captions place the street running up to the Wheat Square, at whose far end the road to Temerin and Budapest began, which puts it on the line of the town's great bazaar. Which street now carries that ground is not settled here.
